San Sebastian western birds and culture

San Sebastian del Oeste offers a great diversity of birds. The lower area is a pine and oak forest home of birds like Acorn woodpeckers, Mexican Jays, Red Warblers, Painted Redstarts, Pygmy Owls, Chestnut sided vireos, Blue Mockingbirds, Grey collared Becards, Magpie Jays, to mention some of the birds. On the road to “La Bufa” a pristine pine forest on the top of Sierra Madre, we might see Long-tail wood partridges, Dusky-capped Flycatchers, Spotted wrens, Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush, brown baked solitaires, Slate-throated redstarts and Mountain trogons.
Founded in 1605, San Sebastian del Oeste was one of the gold and silver mining centers of Mexico. At one time a provincial capital of 40,000 people, you will find it strangely deserted with only about 600 people living there now, with many structures, built of rock and adobe, exceed 100 years of age, and have not been changed in that length of time. Right now, it’s on UNESCO’s list for one of a World Heritage.
Your time in San Sebastián del Oeste can be as calm and relaxing, or active and adventurous as you want it to be. If you have time we can visit the Main Plaza, the Church of San Sebastián, La Quinta coffee shop, a handmade crafts store, etc. but just don’t forget your camera. San Sebastián is truly a photographer’s paradise.

San Blas: World capital of wetland birds
SAN BLAS is located about 3.5 hours north from Vallarta, in the 1700´s it was the most important port of the Mexican Pacific coast when the Spaniards still ruled over Mexico.
Today San Blas is a quiet fishing village and is best known for being the most popular destination for Birding in Mexico. On a relatively small area we can find over 300 different bird species and at least 25 Mexican endemics.
The wetlands, estuaries and mangrove lagoons of this area are probably the widest in Mexico and the most significant to be birded with hundreds of migratory birds plus the local species.
Usually the most exciting collection of species comes from these environments such as Elegant Quail, Rufous-Bellied Chachalaca, Crested Guan, Mexican Blue-Rumped, Parrotlets, Orange-fronted Parakeets, Lilac-Crowned Parrots, Citreoline and Elegant Trogons, to name a few.
A real must at San Blas is the river boat excursion to La Tovara mangroves. You´ll be able to see Rufous-necked Wood-rail, Puaraquees, Purple Gallinules, Bare-throated Tiger Heron, Mangrove Warbler, the impressive Boat-billed Heron and lots of Green Kingfishers.

Sea Turtle Camp and Crocodile Adventure
Get involved and be a volunteer and conservationist for a day! The area of Banderas Bay boasts incredible biodiversity, due to variations in ecosystems and habitats, as a result, it has a large number of animal species, including reptiles. Our adventure provides the opportunity to support the ongoing work of a dedicated team of Mexican biologists in two different conservation projects.
We visit a marshy lagoon “El Quelele” to observe the ever-elusive American Crocodile. With the development of the area the crocodiles are loosing their habitat, so at El Quelele a special facility was created to protect them, a worthy example of sustainable ecology.
Afterward we relocate to a beach to be part of one of the world’s most intriguing natural marvels that takes place quietly and involves tiny, vulnerable creatures: turtle hatchlings. For a few months each year on Puerto Vallarta coast, Olive Ridley sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. By the light of the moon, the baby hatchlings scurry to the sea, remembering forever their birthplace to which they will one day return to continue the cycle of life. During the last season, over 210,000 baby Olive Ridley turtles have been released into their new home, the blue waters of our ocean!! What You Do to Save the World’s Endangered Species Today Will Be Treasured by Your Children Tomorrow!
